John is a tax partner in the Private Client Services group of DHG. With more than 30 years of experience, John has worked with owners and C level executives in many professions, working with private companies from the planning stages to sale of the business focusing on entity classification, nexus, retirement plans and operational improvement through budgeting and long term planning; all with the objective of attaining the client's long term goals by collaborating with the owners and managers.
The businesses in which John has assisted include, but are not limited to architecture, engineering, technology, legal, and medical such as doctors, dentists, orthodontists and veterinarians. John also has experience with manufacturing and hospitality providers, including restaurants, bars and lodging. In addition to working with the businesses, working with the individual owners on income tax planning, wealth accumulation, is an integral aspect of the relationship.
Frequent questions and projects revolve around state and local taxes, sales and use taxes, personal property and gross receipts taxes, as well as international reporting requirements for foreign operations by US entities, US operations by foreign-owned entities, foreign bank accounts and foreign financial assets. John also has significant experience assisting clients in identifying and differentiating independent contractors versus employees and reporting and withholding requirements for both. Throughout his career, John has successfully advocated for entities and individuals before the IRS and various state and local tax agencies.
John is a multiple-time recipient of "Super CPA" designation by Virginia Business Magazine. When not assisting clients, or spending time with his family, John can be found on the golf course.
