Hospital Acquired Conditions: Understanding the Confluence of Risk Adjustment, Clinical Quality and Financial Performance Under Value Based Payments

The HAC Program evaluates hospitals based upon the occurrence of avoidable complications, and penalizes performers in the 25th Percentile or less, 1% of their Medicare Reimbursement. In Fiscal Year 2021, CMS penalized 774 hospitals, bringing the total number of hospitals penalized at least once since program inception (2014), to 1,978.
