Through the recruiting and on-boarding process with DHG, many leaders spoke of the importance of both inclusion and diversity and community service within the firm. In the world today, it’s easy to talk about focusing on these concepts, but it’s much more difficult to demonstrate actions around them. Within the first few weeks of my internship, DHG has demonstrated just that.
In the Richmond office, the interns and our guides participated in two service day projects at Diversity Thrift. This non-profit organization supports the local LGBT community by providing support to many community organizations, and its thrift store sells household items with proceeds going straight to these organizations. In our two days, we helped arrange the thrift store floor by sorting through donated clothes and we helped paint the entryway. In my opinion, incorporating community service into an internship is one of the most rewarding things that a firm can do for its interns. It gives us the chance to bond with each other, give back to the community and appreciate the opportunities that we have been given.
The importance DHG places on both diversity initiatives and community service is one of the reasons I chose to intern with DHG. I believe that DHG’s leadership and its employees are truly passionate about living out these values. It is evident that DHG actively recruits and makes an effort to retain individuals for the unique qualities that they bring to the DHG family. It is essential to surround yourself with different views in order to expand your knowledge and outlook on life. Engaging in activities such as volunteering at Diversity Thrift, or working at your local food bank (which many across DHG did during our recent Count the Cans food drive) provides the opportunity to build one's character and knowledge. In turn, you will be able to provide better client service and thrive in your professional and personal relationships.
