A Conversation with IMPACT Award Winner Andrew Swint on His Passion for Volunteering

In this spotlight, Andrew talks about his passion for volunteering and some of the causes and organizations that are especially important to him in the Charlotte community.

You dedicate an incredible number of hours volunteering and giving back in your community; talk about your passion, why you give back and some of the organizations or causes that are important to you.

It's difficult to summarize but ultimately, I cherish the opportunity to help people, and I am passionate about organizations or causes that support Andrew volunteering with DHG professionalsothers less fortunate in a sustainable manner. When I was a kid, I gave up on a dream because of constraints and I thought it was unrealistic. Ever since I have always had a strong desire to develop people and enable them to achieve their dreams. Whether impacted by poverty, language barriers, health or any unfortunate circumstance, it's important to me to make or at least try to make this world a better place. While I was reminded the other day of Ronald Reagan's quote that states "we can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone," I think we can still swing for the fences and try to help as many people as we can.

How are you efficient in your time management, making sure that you’re meeting client needs and performance goals while finding time to give back?

I’ll admit, at this stage in my life without children, it can be easier to find some free time. I mainly volunteer on the weekends, and I have found that it is usually easier to give up a couple of hours then instead of during the week when people may work most of their time.

Talk about some of the fun things you and the Charlotte IMPACT Committee have organized in the office?

I love this question for so many different reasons. First, it sheds light on our firm's culture and values. It's refreshing to be a part of a firm that has committees like the Charlotte IMPACT Committee which provides opportunities to propose and plan events around our IMPACT themes. This past Habitat for Humanity Mud Volleyball playersweekend, we volunteered at the St. Jude Walk/Run, which was so inspiring to be a part of a fundraiser that raised over $293,000 for the kids of St. Jude. Additionally, for the past couple of years, we have sponsored the Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Mud Volleyball tournament, which is ultimately a fundraiser to support their affordable housing program for low-income families. Other fun events also included a Habitat for Humanity Women Build event (helping put finishing touches on the house), a stream cleaning event with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services and assisting with our United Way campaign event. These events bring people together, help build and strengthen our relationships and in reality, the events are a friendly reminder that there is so much to life.

What did you enjoy most about receiving the award during the Partner Meeting?

Truth be told, I am actually not a fan of roller coasters, so it was having the opportunity to attend and meet so many partners and develop new relationships, and I also learned more about the DHG Foundation.

Any thoughts for others who are thinking about volunteering in the community but who aren’t quite sure where to start or which type of organization to seek out?

With most things in life, I always recommend to ask questions and never to hesitate to contact someone or an organization. If you are interested in Group of Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) volunteersan organization's mission, contact them to see what opportunities they have. The inquiry and interest will surely be appreciated.
